Navigating Health Insurance: How Public Options, Private Coverage and Charitable Assistance Can Work Together for ESRD Patients

This educational activity addresses how charitable assistance from nonprofits can assist patients with their healthcare related costs, including health insurance premiums, transportation assistance, medications and durable medical supplies. Participants will learn about ESRD Medicare eligibility, coverage, costs, enrollment and coordination with employer insurance. • List the patient eligibility requirements for the American Kidney Fund’s (AKF) Health Insurance Premium Program (HIPP) and the financial programs offered
  • Recall how an individual with ESRD becomes eligible for and enrolls into Medicare, and the basics costs for Medicare beneficiaries
  • Identify the coordination of benefits between ESRD Medicare and employer insurance
  • Review of the basic rules and coverage for beneficiaries specific to the ESRD patient regarding Medicare including the option of Marketplace coverage
