Home Hemodialysis: Focus on the Patient

In this activity, several case scenarios presented will highlight different patient factors that would make HHD an attractive option. A physician hosted conversation with a patient will help the attendee understand a patient’s perspective on personal preferences that would influence the decision to choose or not choose HHD. From this conversation the physician will demonstrate interview skills that will enable the patient to easily express reasons for selecting HHD.  Interventions and programmatic procedures to assure patient safety at home will be presented.

Please Pass the Salt – or Not? Debate on Sodium Intake

This activity will consist of talk by a nutritionist regarding how best to quantify the amount of sodium eaten in a day, followed by a debate by two experts in the field of hypertension.  This lecture and debate will highlight issues and conflicting evidence regarding sodium intake and blood pressure and how these relate to cardiovascular outcomes.

The Living Donor: Ethics, Risks, and Overcoming Barriers

Living kidney donation has not increased in volume over the last decade. In this symposium we wish to explore the risks of kidney donation, especially in light of a newer data. We will discuss the medically complex kidney donor and how to mitigate those risks.  The ethics of kidney donation will be explored, especially in the younger donor. Lastly, we will provide practical solutions to increase kidney donation in the years to come.

Do Not Set Sail Without a Compass: Planning the Best Access at the Right Time: Debate

Each patient with progressive or advanced CKD or on renal replacement therapy should have an individualized ESRD Vascular Access Life Plan. Nephrologists, vascular access surgeons, dialysis nurses, vascular interventionalists and ultrasonographers form a team to optimize timing and success of vascular access placement. Early detection of immature fistulas will lead to timely intervention and result in decreased TDC placement and time on HD with a TDC.

KDOQI 20th Anniversary - Guidelines/Updates

This live webinar will look back on 20 years of clinical practice guideline development in nephrology and the widespread changes in practice that have taken place as a result. In addition, we will review the two upcoming KDOQI guidelines (Vascular Access, and Nutrition in CKD) and a recent KDOQI paper considering the evidence for and against stopping ACE inhibitors/ARB in patients with eGFR < 20.
